Darwin
Darwin is without a doubt the hottest place I have ever been. It’s crazy that people can actually live in this heat. We left Cairns at 11 on Thursday morning and arrived in Darwin at 6:30 Saturday evening. That’s 3100kms in well under 3 days. Pretty good going. The last leg was about 1000km from Three Ways north up the Stuart Highway to Katherine and on to Darwin. The 130km speed limit is excellent. Continue reading
Three Ways Roadhouse
These road houses are great. They’re expensive and the petrol is even more expensive but they’re actually a lot nicer than the towns in the Outback. Maybe it’s because I’m always starving when I get to one but the food … Continue reading
Normanton
Normanton is about 800km to the west of Cairns. It’s a nothing town really, just a stop off in the Outback. The drive there is interesting though. The middle of the road is tarmacced but the sides are just dirt … Continue reading
Mission Beach
I was a little bit surprised at how small Mission Beach is. It’s absolutey tiny. There’s a couple of small shops in the town but that’s it. We stayed in this really weird hostel about 5km outside of town. It’s called the TreeHouse and is owned by the YHA, which is why we booked it. The place is like a hippy compune. Continue reading
Townsville
Townsville, i think, is the biggest city in northern Queensland. I only spent a night there as I was keen to get to Cairns. We stayed at some hostel on Flinders St which was really nice. Continue reading
Whitsunday Islands
The Whitsundays are amazing. I loved this part of the trip. We booked the Iceberg boat, left Airlie pretty early on the Sunday morning and joined the rest of the group at the marina. This time we just had English, Italian, French, Swiss. Continue reading
Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach is another of the main spots on the east coast. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and booked into Magnums hostel. A word of advice for anyone booking a hostel in Airlie. Don’t book this place. It’s crap and the staff are terrible. Continue reading
Rockhampton
Now this is a strange place. Rockhampton is famous for beef, apparently. That alone should tell people that there’s not a lot to do in this place. Continue reading
